 By Nem Davies The Myanmar Teleport, one of the country's Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has banned more proxy sites in a fresh move following a technically upgraded report, users in Rangoon said. "We cannot visit government banned sites through freedom mails because they come under the ban, said internet users in Rangoon. Most internet cafés in Rangoon face similar problems when they try to access the previously used proxy sites and freedom mail services. The web page says: "The access to requested URL has been….". At least 13 proxy sites are available to penetrate government banned websites including international wire services and Burmese websites in exile, which normally skirt the government servers. "From around 9:30 am, I could not go to any proxy sites to read news and garner information and I could not get direct access to the internet explorer," said a technician from a downtown internet café whose shop has an internet connection from Bagan Net. Recently, Myanmar Teleport announced that, using proxies was not necessary and to reconfigure web browser settings for better internet browsing. "They [government] are telling lies, I could not surf either by using proxy or get regular access through internet explorer and Firefox, "said a journalist and internet user in Rangoon. The government is filtering internet access to the outside world and has strictly banned information flow from Burma through its major internet service provider, Myanmar Teleport, Bagan Net and Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications. |
