(press release) Source: World Health Organization (WHO) Date: 16 Jun 2008 SEA/PR/1471 New Delhi, 16 June, 2008: The World Health Organization and Health Cluster partners have released the first disease surveillance bulletin in cyclone affected areas based on the Early Warning, Alert and Response System (EWARS). Between 1-7 June, 685 cases of acute respiratory infections, 117 cases of bloody diarrhoea, 542 cases of acute diarrhoea, 337 cases of trauma/injuries, 10 cases of measles, 5 cases of malaria and three cases of suspected dengue hemorrhagic fever were reported. |

Yangon - Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi must be freed this weekend in accordance with the country's laws, a US lawyer announced Friday. Suu Kyi, a Nobel peace prize laureate who heads the National League for Democracy (NLD) opposition party in military-run Myanmar, has been under house detention since May 2003.

By Central Executive Committee, Headquarters Office Burmese generals, without consent and participation of Arakanese, had quietly formalized an agreement to launch an India-funded $135-million multi-modal transportation corridor linking north-east India with Rakhine¢s Sittwe port of Burma. An agreement reached between the two sides soon after Indian petroleum minister Muli Deora¢s visits to Burma in September 2007. |
